Introduction

In recent years, there is a resurrection of studies addressing popular mobilizations, resistance and social movements, protests, (digital) activism, etc. in response to various national and transnational issues, such as refugee crisis, rising authoritarian and populist governments, invasion of consumerism and neoliberalism in people’s lives, and the rising tide of xenophobia and ultra-nationalism. Whereas some studies depict these developments as part of the growing “crisis of citizenship,”1 some others try to explain them by saying that we are witnessing a new “age of resistance.”2 This paper offers an analysis of these two political phenomena – crisis of citizenship and return of resistance – as two deeply connected political processes. In this vein, the main question that I aim to investigate is the following: how can we establish a relationship between crisis of citizenship and return of resistance?
